In 2020, 13 offline mortar casinos in Keystone State had to close. And iGaming surged when physical slot machines, table games and poker rooms were Off=limits.

The Pennsylvania Gaming Commission (PGCB) today released its full-year gaming revenue figures, and it's clear that the state's legal internet casinos have played an important role in the health of the gaming industry during the pandemic. The gaming revenue from iGaming totaled $556.77 million. The online casinos only operated in July 2019.

The total gaming revenue (GGR) for slot machines, table games, iGaming, sports betting, fantasy sports, and video game terminals totaled $2.653 billion in 2020. That means online casinos accounted for 21% of the total gaming money earned in Pennsylvania.

However, sports betting is a small profit-making business, which means the associated GGR and accompanying tax revenue are often not all of that. Conversely, as evidenced by the PGCB report, online casinos can generate significant revenue for land-based casinos.

While online casinos have won more than $500 million, Pennsylvania's mobile and retail sportsbook retained $189.7 million of the bets placed last year.
