South Korean men's archery standout Kim Woo-jin (Cheongju City), a three-time defending world champion, failed to advance to the quarterfinals of the individual competition at the Berlin 2023 World Championships. Kim Jeduk (Yecheon-gun), the two-time Tokyo 2020 Olympic champion, was the only other Korean to reach the quarterfinals.


Kim lost to Indonesia's Arif Pangestu 5-6 (27-24 22-26 24-24 26-27 25-23 <9-10>) in the round of 16 of the men's recurve individual event on Wednesday (March 3) in Berlin, Germany.


Kim, who finished first in the qualifying round, got off to an easy start, taking the first two points with a 27-24 win in the first set.


However, he made a big mistake in the second set when he shot his third arrow for three points and gave away the momentum. He lost the second set 22-26.


After tying the third set 24-24, Kim dropped the fourth set 26-27 to fall behind 3-5. Kim won the fifth set 25-23 to level the set at 5-5, but Pangestu shot 9 of 10 in the shootout to win the match.

Only the youngest of the three men's competitors, Kim Jeduk, made it to the quarterfinals. Kim is the next generation to win gold in the team and mixed events at the Tokyo Olympics.


The women's team, who shocked the world by being eliminated in the first round of the tournament for the first time ever, cruised in the individual competition. Kang Chae-young (Hyundai Mobis), Ahn An (Gwangju Women's University), and Lim Im-hyun (Korea Stay) all reached the quarterfinals.
