Children who are not accompanied by an adult are no longer allowed to use some fruit machines at a seaside amusement arcade.

The Grand Peer of Western Supermare said it was "not out to ruin anyone's fun" but is supporting a national summer trial to tackle teen gambling.

The Gambling Commission says certain types of slot machines are "the most common gambling route" for children.

If the trial succeeds, all arcade owners may have to comply.

The British Rides Catering Trade Association (Bacta), which runs a voluntary trial, recently said it had voted unanimously to "try new measures against cash-paying slot machines in beach arcades."

"Low risk"

John White, from Bacta, said. "As a provider of family entertainment to nearly 20 million people a year, it's important that we reflect what our customers want.

"We have listened carefully to the ongoing debate about children and gambling and we want to make sure that we do everything we can to strengthen existing protective measures."

Grand Peer said it has 45 slot machines of this type and staff will supervise "customers to comply with the test."

Tim Moyle of Grand Pier says research shows the risk of gambling-related damage at beach arcades is "very low" but supports Bakta's goal.

Mr Moyer said: "Visiting playrooms is a major part of the beach holiday but I agree that it is very important to minimize the risk to children as much as possible."

The test means that people under the age of 16 will not be allowed to play Category D machines in participating arcades unless accompanied by people over the age of 18.

A Category D machine is a machine with a stake of up to 10 pounds per player, and the prize money is up to 5 pounds per spin.
