China and Vietnam's top security officials on Wednesday signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on bilateral cooperation to combat cross-border gambling, China's state-run Xinhua news agency reported.

The media reported that the agreement was signed in Beijing at a ministerial-level meeting (pictured) on crime prevention co-hosted by Chinese Public Security Minister Wang Xiaohong and Vietnamese President 土lam.

The report by Xinhua did not elaborate on the contents of the MoU. It also did not say how the two countries would work together to curb cross-border gambling behavior.

The report quoted only Wang as saying that the framework for China and Vietnam to cooperate "strategically" in various fields was previously proposed by Chinese President Xi Jinping and Vietnamese Communist Party General Secretary Nguyen Fu Cheng.

The latter refers to a meeting held in October last year, when the two leaders agreed to promote cooperation on a number of law enforcement topics, including "gambling across borders."

In a press release after Wednesday's meeting, Vietnam's Ministry of Public Security noted that the two sides had committed to coordinating "effective" law enforcement measures against various types of transnational crimes, including drug trafficking, human trafficking, telecommunications and internet fraud, while increasing border patrols.
