User talk:Malaysia to reopen foreign tourists from April 1 PM
Malaysian Prime Minister Ismail Sabri-Jakob said on Tuesday that Malaysia would allow international travelers from April 1 as the country enters the "epidemic" phase of the COVID-19 crisis.
Visitors must test "negative" for COVID-19 within two days of their departure for Malaysia, and under the measures announced now, they must be tested again on arrival. The prime minister said fully vaccinated visitors were not required to undergo quarantine on arrival.
"The move will revive the national economy, especially the tourism industry, which has been greatly affected by the pandemic," Mr Jakob was quoted as saying by local media.
The country has been closed to foreign tourists since March 2020.
Nearly 98% of Malaysia's adult population has been vaccinated and more than half have received booster shots, local media reported.
Prior to the pandemic-related travel restrictions, foreign visitors were an important factor in the income of Resort World Genting, the country's only casino complex, according to investment analysts. The property is operated by Genting Malaysia.
In late February, Genting Malaysia turned to profit in the fourth quarter and said it would pay an annual dividend for 2021. Its flagship Malaysian resort also faced a period of closure during the pandemic.
Genting Sky World, a new outdoor theme park worth 3.3 billion MYR (US$789 million) in Resort World Genting, had a gentle opening ceremony on Feb. 8.
After a pause to assess the risk of the Omicron variant of COVID-19, neighboring Singapore recently reactivated and then expanded its so-called vaccinated travel lane program for inbound and outbound travel through certain countries, including Malaysia.
