Seo Geon-chang, first hit since transferring to KIA

The 'champion candidate' KIA Tigers continued its cruise in the early part of the season by defeating the Doosan Bears thanks to the performance of 'transfer student' Seo Geon-chang.

KIA defeated Doosan 9-3 in the professional baseball 2024 Shinhan SOL Bank KBO League home game held at Jamsil Stadium in Seoul on the 31st.

KIA, which continued its 4-game winning streak including the opening game and suffered its first loss of the season by losing 0-8 to Doosan on the 30th, avoided a losing streak and achieved its 5th win (1 loss) of the season.

The main contributor to the 5th win of the season was Seo Geon-chang.

After two outs in the top of the fifth inning with the game tied 0-0, Seo Geon-chang opened the game with a hit to left-center.

Seo Geon-chang, who reported his first hit after transferring to KIA, immediately succeeded in stealing second base.

Han Jun-su's pitch hit runners on first and second base with two outs, and Choi Won-jun brought Seo Geon-chang home with a single to left.

With 2 outs and runners on 1st and 2nd base, Park Chan-ho's high ball hit a lucky double that landed in front of Doosan left fielder Kim Jae-hwan, and KIA added 2 points.

In the bottom of the 6th inning, Doosan had a chance to catch up with no outs on 1st and 2nd bases, but Nos. 4 to 6 Kim Jae-hwan, Yang Seok-hwan, and Kang Seung-ho all retired with hits and lost the opportunity to catch up.

KIA, having overcome the crisis, ran away with the score 4-0 in the top of the 7th inning, with bases loaded and 1 out on Seo Geon-chang's walk, Han Jun-su's double, and a ball hit by Park Chan-ho. Kim Do-young was hit by a ball from Doosan's right-hand bullpen Choi Ji-kang and scored an RBI. The player who hit home at this time was Seo Geon-chang.

Seo Geon-chang also increased his RBI by hitting a double to right field with no outs on second base in the top of the 8th inning, leading 5-0, and hit home again when Kim Ho-ryeong hit a timely hit to left-center. In the 9th inning, with one out and runners on 1st and 3rd base, Seo Geon-chang made a timely hit to right with 1 RBI.

On this day, Seo Geon-chang played an active part with 3 hits in 4 at-bats, 1 walk, 2 RBI, 3 runs, and 1 stolen base, recording his first hit, RBI, run, and stolen base since his transfer.

Seo Geon-chang, who graduated from Gwangju Jeil High School, joined LG as a training player in 2008 and played in the first team in earnest since 2012 when he was a member of Nexen Heroes (now Kiwoom), playing an active role as a substitute hitter representing the KBO League.

Until last year, he played in 1,256 games and posted a career batting average of 0.297, 1,365 hits, 491 RBIs, and 229 stolen bases.

In particular, in the 2014 season, he achieved 200 hits (201) in a single season for the first time in the KBO League and was named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) in the regular season.

However, he fell into a severe slump starting in 2021 and was unable to play as a starting player after being traded to LG.

Seo Geon-chang, who joined KIA after requesting release from LG at the end of the 2023 season, did not miss the long-awaited opportunity and became the main player in the victory.

Young-Cheol Yoon, a second-year starter after graduating from KIA High School, earned his first win in his first appearance this season by pitching well in 5 innings, allowing 3 hits, no runs, and 5 strikeouts. 한국야동
